Intro to Synthetic Biology Study Guide | 15
Ultimate guide for Learning & Self-Studying Synthetic Biology Online.
I compiled the resources I’ve found most helpful for self-studying synthetic biology online. I made what I wished I had during my junior year of highschool, when I decided that I truly wanted to delve deeper into finding out more about synbio. I was a kid far away from any of the biotech hubs/centers (US, Europe, UK, Canada) so I had to find out everything I wanted to know online! Instead of spending hours looking for resources like I did back then, you can instead watch this video. Enjoy :)
This one’s a more condensed version of the resources I recommend the most. For a much more extensive list of resources, check out The BioIndx made by my friend Sofia Sanchez.
1. Sci-Academia twitter
I compiled everyone who’s at the forefront of working with biotech/synbio in this Twitter list (with the caveat that they also mainly tweet about synbio). This means that you dont have to follow anyone but can actually just slide to the right, see all the relevant biotech content, and stay up to date with the field.
I added:
The biotech founders from Micheal Retchin’s thread
most innovative companies and journals
best up-and-coming startups
scientists in academia & independent researchers
-young startup founders
I tried to get people from all walks of biotech so you have a nice overview of the field whenever you’re on Twitter. Click here for the list!
*I actually made this a couple of weeks before filming this video, and without me even promoting it, or anything, people started following it :) Ergo, it’s a nice list guys
2. Playlists
EBRC - Intro to Synthetic Biology Playlist
IBiology Playlist - This IBiology playlist is SUPER good, but I forgot to talk about it in the video! These are very lecture style, hunker down and learn type of videos. Highly rec.
Synthetic Biology One - Awesome youtube channel.
3. Newsletters
SynBioBeta ←Weekly overview of the synbio field.
GENSPACE newsletter ← Workshops, job opportunities, events, etc.
Century of Bio Substack ← Awesome Synbio blog!
Pillar VC's Founder Playlist resources tailored to biotech founders ’s ← They have monthly newsletters as well!
4. Podcasts
5. Books
IGEM HS Synthetic Biology Guide
Genentech: The Beginnings of Biotech (Synthesis)
6. Courses
MIT OpenCourseWare - Intro to Bioengineering course
Principles of synthetic biology - Edx, online course
CSberg Synthetic Biology Courses - Cohort based, online course
GenSpace Biohacker Bootcamp - in person in NYC, (great reviews) perfect for getting more hands-on experience
RaUniversity courses - if you’re interested in Drug Development, pharma, etc.
7. Organizations to join:
This should cover most for now! Super excited for you and your journey.
For a more extensive list, check out The BioIndx made by Sofia Sanchez. <3 It’s an awesome list/guide too!
Special mention to EBRC’s guide and my personal favorite youtube channel Transhumania.
Peace and love to all, stay happy & productive.
